Here is a recap of our weekend tournament:
Wildcats finish CSC Invite at 2-2
September 9, 2006 – The College of St. Catherine volleyball team finishes up the CSC Invite with a record of 2-2 after winning match one on Saturday and dropping match two. In their first match of the day the Wildcats defeated Bethany Lutheran by a score of 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 30-19).
The Wildcats were paced by Maria Hoffman’s (FY, Montgomery, Minn./ Montgomery Lonsdale) 13 kills in match one. Brooke Salonek (Jr, Montrose, Minn./ Watertown-Mayer) added 10 kills and Emily Van Hon (Jr, Fairfax, Minn./GFW) had nine in the victory. Whitney Sparby (So, Red Wing, Minn./ Red Wing) added 30 set assists and Erika Kriechbaum (So, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) added 12 digs in the match.
“We really came out strong against Bethany Lutheran on Saturday. We did a great job of talking and passing and that led to a strong offensive performance. Brooke [Salonek] came alive and probably played the strongest match of her career. She was a lot of fun to watch. We need to continue to work on finishing matches and we did that against Bethany [Lutheran]” stated head coach Nicole Hess.
In their final match of the tournament the Wildcats fell to Milwaukee School of Engineering by a score of 3-0 (24-30, 25-30, 12-30). Lana Brand (FY, Faribault, Minn./Bethlehem Academy) and Van Hon paced the Wildcats offensive attack and added nine kills each. Hoffman contributed a lot in the back row and had 14 digs, second to Kriechbaum who had 15. On the downside, the Wildcats struggle with their serving continued and they missed a total of 12 in the match.
“We really need to work on serving and giving ourselves a better opportunity to score. We can’t continue to miss serves and expect a positive outcome. Overall, I am pleased with our performance this weekend, and with the progress we have made since the beginning of the season,â€? stated Wildcat head coach Nicole Hess. “We have been playing well as a team and I am looking forward to the start of the conference season,â€? added Hess.
The Wildcat’s 2006 record sits at 4-5, they begin MIAC play on the road facing off against St. Benedict on Wednesday, Sept. 13.
