Strengths & StrengthsFinder

The Gallup StrengthsFinder is one of my life’s passions. Everywhere I go I talk to people about their strengths and how, or if, they are using them in their lives. Recently I worked with all the coaches at Minnesota Select - it was amazing to see how strong these coaches were at our club. You can also see how each coach uses their strengths in the way that they coach. Some are hand-holders, some are driven, etc. etc. This week I am working with our nationally ranked 17-1’s team and helping them discover their strengths. Should be a great team-building time for that group.

As I look towards what could be next for me - I know it will include strengths. I am super-passionate about helping people get going in the right direction in their lives, and learning how to say ‘no’ to bad fits for their lives. I can’t tell people what they should do, but boy oh boy I like helping get them going in a direction. Tomorrow morning I am speaking to a class at St. Kates it is a sales class and there are so many overlaps between selling and your strengths. That will be a great time as well.

It is going to be sunny and 72 today in Minneapolis. JVD

I was wondering if you have taken classes through Gallup, furthering your StrengthsFinder abilities. I am also passionate about helping people discover who they are, but am new on my journey. I was disappointed to find out how expensive the Gallup classes are — are there any alternatives or other options for growth in this area that you can recommend that doesn’t involve thousands of extra dollars? :) Fun to read your post!

    Staci -

Yes, I have been really fortunate to have taken a number of classes / training with Gallup. If you go to http://www.strengthsquest.com the educator seminars are the most affordable way to get some great training. Other than that, it is expensive. One thing you can think about is reading every book on strengths - over and over - It is part of what I have done to know more about the instrument. JVD

Maybe you should do strengths finder with your small group? Have you been able to make many theological connections with small group? Like trying to guess what Simon Peter’s strengths are? That might be real interesting.

Sounds like an awesome job/schedule! I did StrengthsFinder a couple of years back and talked about it with the ministry team I’m on, and it was really insightful into how our team functions. About a year later I found the time to go back through each of my five strengths and blog a bit about them….and interacting with them definitely gave me a lot more insight than simply taking the test and reading a bit about each strength. Good stuff!
