Choices - Subtractions / Additions

Posted on Tuesday 28 March 2006

I laugh to myself sometimes when people say - oh my life is so busy! I have no doubt they are feeling busy, but I wonder sometimes what really is busy? I guess it depends on what those people think is busy. College students especially make me chuckle when they say they are busy. I was in college, I know what busy in college means. What I want to talk about today is additions and subtractions to your life.

Remember - everything you say “Yes” to doing, you are also saying “No” to something else. I am in the middle of making some choices about how I will spend my time the next few months. Danielle and I are part of a new small group - there are some new coaching opportunities I am toying with, but all those things mean no to something else if I choose to say yes.

My boss recently wrote about living a life of balance vs. a life of being centered. Balance is impossible. Being centered is not. Every day I try to be centered, peaceful and ready to take on whatever comes at me. That includes, getting enough sleep, eating right, exercising, loving my wife, processing whatever comes my way. So, remember - if you say yes to something, you are saying no to something else already in your life. So, choose wisely — JVD

“Whoa.. its Ryan”.. Yes, suspend your disbelief for just a moment. Here’s Ryan’s secret to good balance. Always maintain a low center of gravity. Physically we all know what this means, keep your knees bent, hands below your shoulders, and try not to carry large objects on your shoulders. And your life’s center? Keep it low and focused on things that are “weighty.” God loves you and is actively involved in your life. Love God back and seek Him first. Keep your knees bent, humbly pursuing God’s direction in your choices. Love your wife that “your prayers may not be hindered.” Don’t carry large objects on your shoulders, “casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.”

So maybe we should forget balance, or centeredness, and fall down in pursuit of loving Jesus. At least then when I undoubtedly fall, I will fall in the right direction.

Thanks for making me think Joe! L8R - Ryan
